It has always been a dream of mine to work in conservation (I live in Australia and unfortunately, like in most countries, this field does not usually earn a reasonable amount of money to live off of, especially considering it requires years of study), and to visit Peru or Ecuador, and experience the Amazon rainforest. I didn't think I would ever have the chance to travel there however I am now in university studying a health-related degree and have discovered an opportunity to volunteer in Peru. There are many volunteer opportunities, mainly in Cusco and there is an opportunity to work in Amazon Jungle Conservation. I want to know if Peruvian locals might feel a certain way about foreign volunteers, generally? I have had other international experiences with university which weren't volunteer-based, where we were hosted, and I feel like travelling and volunteering will fill a gap and not make me feel like a burden to the people hosting me, but like I can help out in someway, even if it is just through labour, I think I will treasure the experience. Something I should mention is that I am a Muslim woman and I wear a headscarf. I understand there are many negative stereotypes and conceptions of Muslims across the globe and Peru would be the same. I still feel I shouldn't be limited by people making assumptions about me as they don't know me, I guess my main concern is for my safety but I would hope the organisation I'm with may be able to provide some reassurance of that.
