Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I will be in Arequipa in October, and we're looking into visiting/hiking Misti. We are not planning to hike the entire Misti volcano. Instead, we'd love to drive as high as reasonably possible, park the car, and then hike part of the way up to get a great viewpoint over Arequipa and the surrounding area. We will have a 4x4 rental car. I've read that there is an off-road track that can get you to roughly 4,100–4,200 m, after which you can continue on foot towards the high camp around 4,700–4,800 m. I also found a route which indicates that there is a parking place located halfway. link&wa=so&utm_campaign=badge&utm_source=unknown&utm_medium=unknown Has anyone actually done this type of route independently or with a guide willing to go with them? We are looking into a guide who can walk with us; that way we won't be completely by ourselves, considering the altitude, etc. I'd especially love to know: - Where can you realistically drive to with a 4x4? - Is there somewhere safe/appropriate to leave the car? - Is the road accessible without a local guide or special permission? - How difficult is the hike from the end of the road? - Is there a particularly good viewpoint before the high camp? - Are there any access restrictions or things we should know about the reserve? - And if you've done this yourself, do you have a route you could share? We're mainly looking for a day trip, driving up as high as possible, hiking for a few hours, enjoying the views, and returning to the car the same day.
