I'm a gringo currently in Lima, and yesterday I went to the Alianza vs Universitario match at Alejandro Villanueva. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be a casual tourist event, but man, I completely underestimated it. I've been to games all over South America—Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, etc.—and I've honestly never felt that level of tension anywhere else. I originally ended up in the South stand, but got approached pretty fast by some angry ultras who were pissed off that I wasn't wearing an Alianza shirt or knowing the chants. I moved to another section right after, but the whole vibe was just chaotic and aggressive the entire night. What blew my mind was that even with zero Universitario fans allowed in the stadium, Alianza fans were constantly getting into fights with each other. Riot police were actively jumping into the stands to break stuff up every 20 minutes. Add in the fact that security wouldn't even let you bring a belt inside because it's a weapon threat, and it felt way more like a high-security prison than a football match. Not complaining at all, I know La Victoria is a rough area and this derby is heavy, but as someone who thought they were used to South American matchday culture, this was a totally different beast. Just wanted to share the story.
