Okay, I have some down time and am excited to share this debrief on this sub. Im sorry this is so long of a read, I split it up into each city we visited, but the trip was an experience so there’s a ton to cover. I also did not find much on this sub Reddit about Inkaterra Amazónica Reserva which is the Amazon lodge we stayed with and I cannot rave about this place enough so if you are planning a trip with them, I will go in depth on this post as well. So let’s start with our itinerary and I’ll get into everything in between. If anyone wants me to go even more in depth on anything let me know! We went in late August - early September Lima - 5 days/4 nights \- Paracas/Huacachina day trip Puerto Maldonado - 5 days/4 nights \- Amazon jungle lodge experience Cusco - 7 days/6 nights \- 2 day sacred valley & Machu Picchu tour Lima I know people don’t typically spend too much time here or skip it all together, but I am SO HAPPY we spent the time here. Overall, felt like the 5 days (or technically 4 given the travel day) was the perfect amount of time here especially with the day trip in between. We covered most of the big sites and what we wanted to see within the 5 days and did not leave feeling we missed out on anything or felt bored when we were there. What we Did: (the big stuff worth noting) \- Huaca Pucllaña - worth the visit, be prepared to wait in the line for tickets/tours. I think they do one Spanish, one English tour every hour or maybe every half hour. You can’t purchase tickets in advance, overall we ended up waiting an hour before we got on a tour, which I think was just bad luck with timing on our end, but just be prepared. \- Museo Larco - worth the visit, the exotic room is super weird lol but interesting, could be done within 2 hours. The storage room is absurd and really satisfied my type A/ocd personality with how everything was categorized and stored. \- Historic Center - worth it but only for the San Francisco Basilica & Catacombs. We did our own DIY walking tour of all the typical sites, and we felt that was good enough and we read about what we saw later. The catacombs were insane and really creepy, but also really cool. However, I’ll get into the rest of the historic center experience in a bit… \- Barranco - yes, explored for half the day and feel like that’s probably all you need. The concept stores are truly so fun to browse through, and the neighborhood was fun to walk through. \- Paracas/Huacachina day trip - BOOK THIS. this was a 19 hour day. Yes 19 hours. But I don’t regret this one bit. We did the Premium tour with Peru Hop and felt it was worth every penny. Our guide was extremely organized and communicative. Hard to believe we went from seeing penguins on an island to sand boarding off a dune in one day, but we did it and had an amazing time. link Where we Stayed: Hilton Garden Inn Miraflores, felt very safe and touristy in a good way. Def a bit crowded walking around, but it was close to everything we wanted to do so it was a good location overall. Super easy to get around by Uber as well. Where we Ate/Drank: I am a foodie, so Lima satisfied all of my expectations. (Bold - highly recommend) \- Coffee: Kaldis, Millimetrica, Demo \- Restaurants: Panchita (food was so good but service was horrendous but I’d still come back and recommend if you can overlook having to wait 30 mins for water and wine and then another 30 for ur food lol), Bardo’s, Mérito, Osaka, Siete, El Mercado \- the only bar we went to was Lady Bee and I LOVED THIS PLACE. Cocktails were so creative, service was great and I can’t wait to return Now for the things we did experience that were not highlights and want to share so others are aware. \- Our flight was delayed getting into Lima, we landed at 1:30AM. I was nervous about being able to connect to a driver but we got an uber almost immediately. We’re 20 minutes into our drive, and our driver FELL ASLEEP behind the wheel for a few seconds to the point where he started to swerve. I tapped his seat and he jolted awake. This was TERRIFYING, but thank god it was late and not many cars on the highway. This being what we experienced the first night coming in put a really bad taste in my mouth, but the rest of the time spent in Lima helped to curb this. I guess just sharing so people are extra cognizant of their surroundings especially late at night. \- So we thought since we were in the historic district we should go walk down Chinatown (which is really just one street). I say don’t do it. It was overwhelming and in a super dense urban pocket of the historic district. We tried walking a couple blocks away to get an Uber and it just kept getting more and more dense with more cars following less and less traffic rules. It got so overwhelming at one point and it was not a great experience for us. Not that we felt unsafe, but it was getting dark and we definitely felt like we were under a microscope walking in this area. We ended up circling back to the Plaza San Martin and were luckily able to get an uber because traffic at this time around 5-6pm was AWFUL in the historic district. So if you come and you’re staying in Miraflores, I recommend coming during off peak hours so you don’t end up sitting in traffic for an hour. \- And I know people already say this, but lima driving and traffic is no joke lol. Like I was clutching my seat every time I got in the car. Props to all the uber/taxi drivers in Lima for real. Puerto Maldonado/Inkaterra Amazónica Reserva Wowowowowowoow I have nothing but raving reviews about this part of the trip and this lodge specifically. This was truly the most mesmerizing experience of the entire trip and I am already thinking of either coming back or experiencing an eco lodge elsewhere. So overall, I think what really made our experience was the group that we got put in. We were all super down to explore and do everything, all knew what we were expecting staying at a lodge in the jungle (and I say this because some of the things I heard others complaining about was ABSURD i.e. hair not being able to dry in the humidity), and we all just genuinely got along so well. The rooms, the hospitality, the food (given that we were in the middle of the jungle was fine but not the best part of this experience), the excursions, and the wildlife we saw was incredible (again this is time/luck/tour guide based and we got incredibly lucky) Excursions: we actually didn’t do all the included excursions that they offered even though we were there for 3 full days. They offer 9 included excursions and 6 extra fee ones. \- River Night Cruise (included) - we did this twice. The first time we didn’t see much, the second time we saw a ton of caimans and a capybara and I was so happy. \- Jungle Walk (included) - this was insane. We saw 5 types of spiders (so terrifying), and not one but FOUR tarantulas. This was crazy seeing all the creepy crawlers at night but so cool. \- Lake Sandoval (included) - this is the big excursion that they take all the groups on. Boat ride to hike to canoe on the creek to the lake. We got so lucky and saw a whole family of red howlers, a ton of caimans, tons of birds especially macaws, and the whole experience on the lake was amazing. \- Canopy tour & bridge (included) - this was fine. The bridge definitely was a bit sketch cuz the wooden planks had big gaps in between. And it’s not just one bridge you walk over, you gotta walk over 6 lol. I was over it after 2 but I had no choice to continue. We also did this in the SCORCHING heat, so that was not very enjoyable. Was it fun? Sure. Do I want to do this again? Absolutely not. \- Early Morning Canopy Bird Watching (secret included excursion our tour guide took us on) - this was so COOL. We saw so many birds, and a TOUCAN which was insane to see in person. If you’re a bird lover, you may want to ask your tour guide if this can be an option for you, but I’m not sure if it’s offered every time… \- Cow Farm (secret included excursion) - this was fine. And not the official name for this at all lmao. We just had a free afternoon so our guide took the boat over to a nearby farm and we just watched more birds here. We prob didn’t need to do this but just something to do while we had the down time. \- Lake Valencia Piranha Fishing (extra fee excursion) - I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH. Wow, we were hesitant to pay extra (500 soles/person) for this given how much we spent on this portion of our trip already, BUT I AM SO GLAD WE DID. This was an insane day, we fished in the lake for piranhas which is not like real fishing at all. Once you drop your hook & bait into the water they come to you immediately, I caught 5 with no fishing experience at all and all within 15 seconds of dropping in my hook. We had to ride through a creek from the river to the lake and the creek was so much fun to go through. Then they cook the piranhas for you for lunch + other things like steak, salads, sandwiches were prepared. The piranhas were perfectly grilled and tasted great. Oh and they also let you hop in the lake for a quick swim, I did not do this lol but others in my group and my boyfriend did…but yeah this excursion was so worth it. They had drinks (alcoholic & non alcoholic) stocked on the boat. This was just a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so glad we did this. Just note you need at least 4 people in your group willing to go, and again our group was great and was adventurous enough to do this. Cabanas: Expect open screened windows and doors. They come set up your room every night to create more privacy and set up the mosquito net for the bed. There’s no AC and there is a fan, BUT the power goes out at night so it can be brutally hot at night depending on weather that day. But you’re in the Amazon, so what can you really expect.
