Gringo here. Living in Lima with my Peruvian wife. It seems like everywhere I turn trying to live in Peru, I see rampant incompetence in all the institutions. Examples: I went to SUNAT to register to pay exorbitant taxes and their employee actually told me that I don't have to pay taxes to Peru because I am a gringo with a foreign job. This is absolutely false and I was shocked that an actual SUNAT representative would tell me such blantantly false information. I had him issue me a RUC anyway, because I knew he was wrong. I'll just deal with a Peruvian accountant to make sure I'm set and do things correctly. I also have been given incorrect information by bank officials, immigration officials, and pretty much any official that has power in this country. And I also see what happens to my wife. When she showed up to vote in this election (the first round, obviously), they told her that she cannot vote. Somehow they fucked up her paperwork and she has to travel to some town that is like two hours away (some place she has never even been), which meant that she didn't get to vote that day. BUT they said they couldn't fix it in time for the second round so she'll have to travel there to vote this week. Can't fix it why? They don't have fucking computers or something? Why do they overcomplicate everything? I am not accustomed to this level of extreme incompetence everywhere I turn. There are a lot of things I love about Peru, but this kind of stuff is infuriating and exhausting. Also, before you want to lay into me - I know the U.S. sucks as well. It's why I'm not there.
