INCREASE. In the Peruvian province of Condorcanqui, on the border with Ecuador, a new cocaine production hub has emerged since the pandemic.
The department of Amazonas in Peru recorded the highest growth (44%) in coca cultivation in the country between 2023 and 2024, according to data from the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida). Between 2020 and 2024, coca crops in the border region with Ecuador nearly tripled, rising from 656 to 1,818 hectares. The epicenter of drug trafficking lies in the district of Nieva, within the province of Condorcanqui, at the heart of the Awajún and Wampis indigenous territories. According to confidential documents, interviews with police officers, and testimonies from the area, a dissident from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) directs cocaine production in the region.
